Mykola Tomenko: People considered the Tax Code as a Tool of Fight against the Small and Middle-Size Business and for Protection of Big Business

"People considered the Tax Code as a tool of fight against the small and medium-sized business and for protection of big business," Mykola Tomenko concluded from the results of the nationwide poll conducted by Ukrainske Demokratychne Kolo agency to order of the Institute of Politics on 2-8 November 2010.

Mykola Tomenko, Deputy Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, stated that most Ukrainians (58,9%) did not support the newly-drafted Tax Code. Only 9,2% of the citizens support it, while 31,9% could not make a decision. The Deputy Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine claimed, "It is the case when non-acceptance of the Tax Code united Ukraine, as most citizens in different regions object to its adoption." "Moreover, a newly-drafted Tax Code provokes active rejection, as 19,7% of the respondents expressed their willingness to participate in the protests," M.Tomenko stressed.

The Deputy Chairman believes that the lack of public support is caused by the non-transparent increase of the tax load on big business, and several corruption scandals involving the family members of the high-ranking officials who misappropriate the budget. "While the big business actively withdraws the capital to the offshore territories, and high-ranking officials abuse budget funds, moralizing claims of the authorities that the Tax Code is a necessary public sacrifice to support the State Budget, the pensioners and the community reduced the public support of the Tax Code to zero", the Deputy Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine stated.

"Even if a newly-drafted Tax Code is adopted, it will be illegitimate, i.e. the document rejected by the majority," Mykola Tomenko summed up.
